Climate Risk Assessments

Climate change presents a range of risks that must be assessed across business, individual, and governmental levels.

- For businesses, the risks include disruptions to supply chains, increased operational costs due to changing regulations and carbon pricing, and potential physical damage to infrastructure caused by extreme weather events like storms, floods, and heatwaves.

- For individuals, health risks from heat-related illnesses, displacement due to rising sea levels or flooding, and economic challenges from crop failures or resource scarcity are becoming more apparent.

- for governments on the other hand, face the dual challenge of mitigating climate impacts while ensuring socioeconomic stability, including managing large-scale migrations and investing in adaptation infrastructure to protect citizens from the growing intensity of climate-related disasters.

Sea Level Rise

Global mean sea level has risen about 8–9 inches (21–24 centimeters) since 1880. Globally, 8 of the world’s 10 largest cities are near a coast, in urban settings along coastlines, rising seas threaten everyone starting from individual homeowner to civic authority building/managing road infrastructure, utility networks and commercial settlements. Major cities like Miami, Jakarta, and Dhaka are already seeing the effects, with frequent storm surges, erosion, and saltwater intrusion into freshwater systems. Low-lying island nations, such as the Maldives, face the existential risk of disappearing entirely as sea levels rise.

For businesses, this means assessing the vulnerability of assets in coastal regions, while governments must invest in protective infrastructure and develop strategies for the relocation of affected populations. This intensifying threat underscores the need for immediate climate action across sectors to mitigate the long-term risks associated with rising seas.
